AcroFutures: The Story of Kenyan Acrobats
AcroFutures follows a group of determined young men from the Kenyan coast as they defy poverty and social stigma through the transformative power of acrobatic arts.
Currently in Production: AcroFutures is a full-length documentary that tracks the journey of the Diani Mambo Acrobats Group, a dedicated group of young men hailing from the Kenyan coast, as they challenge poverty and societal prejudices through the transformative influence of acrobatics. By performing in high-end tourist venues, these acrobats are fighting for fair compensation and working towards reclaiming authority over their artistic aspirations within the creative economy of Kenya. The documentary captures their unwavering efforts to establish their own training center, school, and performance area—a symbol of their refusal to allow external factors to dictate their happiness, strength, and artistry. Through their quest, AcroFutures exemplifies the resilience of the human spirit, the significance of self-advocacy, and the strength of community in the face of challenges.
With its broad appeal, AcroFutures strikes a chord with viewers by showcasing the acrobats' resilience and resolve to shape their destinies. The film weaves together personal narratives, cultural heritage, and broader socio-economic issues to craft a compelling story that champions economic fairness and acknowledges their contributions to Kenyan culture. By highlighting themes of optimism, empowerment, and self-sufficiency, AcroFutures not only honors the creativity of the Diani Mambo Acrobats but also sparks a wider dialogue about the struggle for respect and opportunity in marginalized communities. This project aligns with FAMe's commitment to sharing the stories of marginalized communities, particularly within the African diaspora, in a respectful and captivating manner, while also contributing to the global discourse on economic fairness and cultural preservation. It includes an educational and training component aimed at empowering local Kenyans to narrate their own stories through film.
